So, grab a cup of coffee or tea and settle in to hop around the internet and get your fill of creativity as you bounce from blog to blog to see just what people were able to make with beads that came as a surprise in the mail.
To review, the rules are that when you are paired with your partner, you get in touch and exchange beads. You must include a focal piece and a clasp along with whatever other beads you want to send. Participants create something with the beads they receive, adding from their own stock if they wish. The only requirement is that you use the clasp and the focal piece in your creations.
My partner, Barbara Mason, lives in Ashland, Oregon, where she divides her time between being a hospice nurse and making jewelry. Her website is called Adorningly Yours, and she makes some very cool things. Be sure to check it out! This is her second time participating in the BSBP and my third time.
Here are the beads she sent to me: (I apologize for the photo quality, I took the picture in haste!)
And now for the reveal. I don’t tend to use focal pieces much in my work so I have found this part of the Bead Soup to be a challenge in all 3 of the times I have participated. The large focal stone, mushroom jasper, is mesmerizing to look at and I love the green and red aspect of it. Here is the necklace I made with it. It is strung on silk ribbon which ended up being my least favorite part of the necklace.
I’m not satisfied with how this piece came out, but think the components have potential to be reworked into something I like better. For me that is what the Bead Soup project is all about. Trying something new and learning from it.
The second necklace uses one of the two handmade sterling silver clasps from Barbara. Isn’t it interesting that we each sent the other a clasp of silver, featuring dots, that we had made ourselves? This necklace also includes the Moss Agate pieces Barbara sent, to which I added a variety of quartz from my own stash of beads.
Last is a necklace I made when we had the extra week added to the BSBP deadline. (Thank you Lori! Hope you’re feeling better!) I used the striped quartz as a focal for this one and explored going from a double strand to a single strand using hammered silver rings. Those tiny glass beads in the connecting loops are actually from my first bead soup partner3 years ago. Kind of fun to find a way to use them in this future BSBP piece!
Now it’s time for you to hop on over to the other blogs. Take your time. There were 500 of us who signed up for this! It’s going to take me all week, at least, to see what everyone has made. Inspiring and fun. The names and links are below. Make sure you check out my partner Barbara Mason’s blog FIRST. Here’s a photo of the eclectic soup I sent to her. I can’t wait to see what she chose to use from it!

Fantastic! I cannot decide which of those necklaces I like the best. I’m strongly attracted to the last one with the banded agate.

Barb, I got worried when I clicked on your name from the comment you left on my blog post and your blog wasn’t listed! But then I saw you posted on the side bar list and felt relief…. you’re still here and accessible. :)
Your partner was truly generous! What a hoard of good sized stones to create with! And create you did! I really enjoy the first necklace, it is packed full of wonderful color and texture and I would enjoy wearing this piece very much! The second piece is light and lovely, each bead spaced to show it off well.
And the last necklace, such sophistication! The layered stone and pearl look is timeless in its appeal and you made it special with that gorgeous handmade clasp!
Thank you for visiting my party post! I will see you on facebook soon!

I actually love the top necklace! The design, silk and colors are lovely together with that focal. But I do “get” that sometimes a piece is still talking to the designer and saying “I’m not quite there yet.” All your pieces are beautiful and have such a lovely balance to them. :)

The first one is sort of tribal and a very innovative way of putting things toether. The next one is SO you. And your third one was constructed the same as one of mine…and I see things I should have done with mine. There is so much to learn from each other, that’s my favorite part of doing bead soup.

Barbara I would not have known that focals were challenging for you. You used them very well in all three of your designs. I like the elements and configuration in the first necklace. Perhaps you would like it better strung on something other than the silk. The moss agate necklace is my favorite. The two to one necklace is well though out too. Kudos to you for trying new techniques.

Frankly, I love the first necklace most of all! It is luscious, well structured, statement! Those big jasper stones are well combined with smaller beads in the same colors. I even like the ribbon. In comparison, the other two necklaces are more subtle and also very beautiful!

Although you’re not totally satisfied with your first necklace, it’s definitely my favorite one. :) It’s a beautiful color combination. Maybe. if you redo it, you could user leather or thick silver wire as a base. Check out for example the gallery on my website. It’s the piece with brown and blue cubes.

I think you did an awesome job with the large stone focal in your first necklace! The silk was a beautiful textural element that added a tribal and bohemian feel to it. You could wear it with anything!! The second necklace is my favorite, however. It’s just springy and sophisticated. The third necklace is just as beautiful as the others. Great job!! Gina H

All of your necklaces are lovely and I think the silk cord is a nice addition to all those colours in the beads in the first one.
My favourite is the single strand with the mix of opaque and translucent stones. i love the airiness of it, even though they are large nuggets they don’t give the impression of heaviness .

I love all three of your necklaces, but I think my absolute fave is the last one…love the 2/1 transition. I also understand your quandry about the silk ribbon; I always love it in others’ pieces, but never quite know how to manage it in my own. I think you did well!

My favorite is the first piece. I love the way you pulled the colors together, just gorgeous. I think that if you’re still not liking it….. the side drops have a really nice weight to them visually, but the drop the focal hangs from seems lighter than the rest. That’s really the only thing I can see that could be fiddled with, I like the rest as is and really can’t imagine it any other way :)
Great soup!!
