So, grab a cup of coffee or tea and settle in to hop around the internet and get your fill of creativity as you bounce from blog to blog to see just what people were able to make with beads that came as a surprise in the mail.
To review, the rules are that when you are paired with your partner, you get in touch and exchange beads. You must include a focal piece and a clasp along with whatever other beads you want to send. Participants create something with the beads they receive, adding from their own stock if they wish. The only requirement is that you use the clasp and the focal piece in your creations.
My partner, Barbara Mason, lives in Ashland, Oregon, where she divides her time between being a hospice nurse and making jewelry. Her website is called Adorningly Yours, and she makes some very cool things. Be sure to check it out! This is her second time participating in the BSBP and my third time.
Here are the beads she sent to me: (I apologize for the photo quality, I took the picture in haste!)
And now for the reveal. I don’t tend to use focal pieces much in my work so I have found this part of the Bead Soup to be a challenge in all 3 of the times I have participated. The large focal stone, mushroom jasper, is mesmerizing to look at and I love the green and red aspect of it. Here is the necklace I made with it. It is strung on silk ribbon which ended up being my least favorite part of the necklace.
I’m not satisfied with how this piece came out, but think the components have potential to be reworked into something I like better. For me that is what the Bead Soup project is all about. Trying something new and learning from it.
The second necklace uses one of the two handmade sterling silver clasps from Barbara. Isn’t it interesting that we each sent the other a clasp of silver, featuring dots, that we had made ourselves? This necklace also includes the Moss Agate pieces Barbara sent, to which I added a variety of quartz from my own stash of beads.
Last is a necklace I made when we had the extra week added to the BSBP deadline. (Thank you Lori! Hope you’re feeling better!) I used the striped quartz as a focal for this one and explored going from a double strand to a single strand using hammered silver rings. Those tiny glass beads in the connecting loops are actually from my first bead soup partner3 years ago. Kind of fun to find a way to use them in this future BSBP piece!
Now it’s time for you to hop on over to the other blogs. Take your time. There were 500 of us who signed up for this! It’s going to take me all week, at least, to see what everyone has made. Inspiring and fun. The names and links are below. Make sure you check out my partner Barbara Mason’s blog FIRST. Here’s a photo of the eclectic soup I sent to her. I can’t wait to see what she chose to use from it!

80 responses to “It’s Bead Soup Blog Party time!”
Thanks H. Can’t wait to catch up with you guys in NY (if not here.) I’ll bring some raisin walnut bread to the theater!!
Lovely stuff! It was great to see what you made with your soup :-)
Great work! And what a LONG list of soupers! I actually really like the silk in the top one…..
It’s going to take a long time to look at all of those blogs!
Everything is gorgeous but I especially adore that first necklace. I am drawn in by the colors, texture, and movement.
Fantastic! I cannot decide which of those necklaces I like the best. I’m strongly attracted to the last one with the banded agate.
Love each one of your beautiful necklaces, each are stunning.
Barb, I got worried when I clicked on your name from the comment you left on my blog post and your blog wasn’t listed! But then I saw you posted on the side bar list and felt relief…. you’re still here and accessible. :)
Your partner was truly generous! What a hoard of good sized stones to create with! And create you did! I really enjoy the first necklace, it is packed full of wonderful color and texture and I would enjoy wearing this piece very much! The second piece is light and lovely, each bead spaced to show it off well.
And the last necklace, such sophistication! The layered stone and pearl look is timeless in its appeal and you made it special with that gorgeous handmade clasp!
Thank you for visiting my party post! I will see you on facebook soon!
Thanks for letting me know that my blog wasn’t listed with my comment. Hmmm…..I’ll have to check on that. Thanks for stopping by here!
I actually love the top necklace! The design, silk and colors are lovely together with that focal. But I do “get” that sometimes a piece is still talking to the designer and saying “I’m not quite there yet.” All your pieces are beautiful and have such a lovely balance to them. :)
Wow. That Soup is was out of my comfort zone and you did such as awesome job of showing off the beads you received to their best advantage. I am partial to the bib necklace.

I love the color combination of your first necklace, I like the structure of your last necklace and I admire your approach to learning.
Wow! Love each piece!
Lovely creations!! I really like the one at the end with the double strand!! Great job!! ~KM
Your first necklace has a wonderful mix of color and texture! Just beautiful layout and feel to it!
Love the colours in the top necklace, pretty pieces.
I just found your blog as I searched for vinegar patina techniques. Thanks for posting that! I wish I had discovered this before you did your bead soup. How can I get involved in the next one?
Denise @ The Modern Rogue
Barb- It is always an amazing event and you did so well using so many of the beads I sent to you!!! Beautiful work! I can see how the mushroom jasper focal was a challenge but I think you did it proud!
Love all of your creations!!!
I would say your soup came out perfect! I truly love all the pieces, but I am drawn to the first one just as it is! Great work! Thanks for joining and posting!
Such lovely work well done!
The first one is sort of tribal and a very innovative way of putting things toether. The next one is SO you. And your third one was constructed the same as one of mine…and I see things I should have done with mine. There is so much to learn from each other, that’s my favorite part of doing bead soup.
You handled that large focal wonderfully! And wow is it a stunner. I love the necklace with the moss agate and quartz, too. The clasp definitely looks like something you would have made. Great job! :)
I really like how your designs show off the stones you were sent. That last necklace is classic & elegant. Very nice work on all of your pieces.
Wow! I’d be hard pressed to pick a favorite. Great work. You really put the right amount of zing in your soup.
I really love the first necklace, even though you said you weren’t completely satisfied how it turned out. the colour combo is awesome.
the other pieces are very, very cool too.
Barbara I would not have known that focals were challenging for you. You used them very well in all three of your designs. I like the elements and configuration in the first necklace. Perhaps you would like it better strung on something other than the silk. The moss agate necklace is my favorite. The two to one necklace is well though out too. Kudos to you for trying new techniques.
Oh my your pieces are so beautiful, great job!
all pieces are great, but the first necklace is absolutely stunning!!
Your first necklace is a great success, I hope you grow to appreciate it. Please don’t change it, try wearing it to see what response you get. I imagine you’ll get many admirers.
I seriously can’t decide which one I like best as everything you made is so beautiful! The last necklace is so elegant and gorgeous!
All three are amazingly and I don’t know I happen to like the first one alot. I love how each necklace is so bold, real statement pieces. The last necklace is so beautiful, perfect capture going single to double.
Nice work! My favorite is the second necklace. You did a nice job with the stones and beautiful clasp. I love the colors too.
Love your work— the first one is just stunning— Great Job
Barbara! I love, love, love the first necklace! All are amazing, but this – perfect for myself!
Wonderful necklaces! i really like the second one as it is a bit more simpler but very stylish.
I think you should wear the first necklace, you might change your mind once you feel its flow :) I like it. And I like everything else – very organic feel.
I love the last one the best. Wonderful designs.
Frankly, I love the first necklace most of all! It is luscious, well structured, statement! Those big jasper stones are well combined with smaller beads in the same colors. I even like the ribbon. In comparison, the other two necklaces are more subtle and also very beautiful!
I love your first necklace the best, perhaps because it has wire wrap and I’m a wire person! All are beautiful!
Wonderful soup and equally wonderful necklaces.
I love ,love the first necklace it has a tribal look.
So great soup and such lovely pieces you made! My favourite is the necklace with moss agate!
I really like the last one with the partial double strand. Great that the additional week worked so well for you :)
Beatiful necklaces. The first one is my favourite.
Beautiful designs. I love the: colors, layers and composition of your pieces. xo Genea
What a beautiful design. The first necklace is simply stunning, elegant, I love it so much.
Your designs are right up my alley. I love the colors . They have such a vibrant feel.
I really like your first necklace! I love that ist’s strung on silk ribbon- something I want to try. I also love the soft quality and designs of the other necklaces!
I am just discovering the beauty of stones, Barbara, so your post is like a wonderful primer for me :) I actually love the arrangement of your first design, but I understand sometimes there is that little “something” one needs to tweak :)
You did a wonderful job with your soup. The necklaces are all beautiful and I noticed the neat work you do. Especially love the first necklace.
It’s great to meet somebody else who suffers from Focal Anxiety :) Seriously, though, you did a great job – love the use of coin pearls on the striped quartz necklace!
Ha ha ha. We could start a group! Focal anxiety sufferers! Thanks for your nice comments.
Beautiful pieces! I know you’re not thrilled with the first piece, but I think it’s unique and must have been a challenge. My favorite piece is the 2nd one – it’s so classic and chic! Great job!
All three necklaces are wonderful. I love the first design, It is a wonderful statement necklace.
Interesting that you aren’t happy with the first necklace. I think it is stunning and I especially love the look of the silk ribbon. Everything is gorgeous. Great work.
Although you’re not totally satisfied with your first necklace, it’s definitely my favorite one. :) It’s a beautiful color combination. Maybe. if you redo it, you could user leather or thick silver wire as a base. Check out for example the gallery on my website. It’s the piece with brown and blue cubes.
LOVE your design !!! My favorite is the second necklace. But actually all of them are beautiful. Good Job!! Thank you for visiting me and give some nice words :-)
I love all of oyur necklaces, also the first one :-) But the second one with the subtle colors is my favourite. Great work!
I think you did an awesome job with the large stone focal in your first necklace! The silk was a beautiful textural element that added a tribal and bohemian feel to it. You could wear it with anything!! The second necklace is my favorite, however. It’s just springy and sophisticated. The third necklace is just as beautiful as the others. Great job!! Gina H
I hate that you’re not completely pleased with your first piece, it is really nice. However, don’t hesitate to take it apart it you are not happy with it. As for your other two pieces, they are really lovely. I especially like the moss agate and quartz necklace but the other one with the pearls is also very pretty.
I just LOVE the first necklace!!!!! Beautiful work on all the pieces!
Lovely, lovely necklaces!! The large stones are so fun!
Very nice use of your focal. I love your multi-strand necklace!
I love your designs! Especially the first one! We are always our worst critics! The Barbara’s rule!!!
All of your necklaces are lovely and I think the silk cord is a nice addition to all those colours in the beads in the first one.
My favourite is the single strand with the mix of opaque and translucent stones. i love the airiness of it, even though they are large nuggets they don’t give the impression of heaviness .
Sorry it’s taken me so long to get to your blog, but I’m glad I did! I love the last piece. I could see it a lot of different outfits. Beautiful!
All gorgeous pieces, but my jaw literally dropped for the first necklace, simply amazing, original and love how you matched the different colors and stones…
Beautiful designs! I love your mix of rough and smooth shapes. I love the colors you’ve chosen as well. The colors of the moss agate are accented beautifully.
Barb – thank you so much for coming by my blog. And of course, I had to visit yours to see what you made for the BSBP. My favorite is the last double strand necklace which I would wear in a heartbeat.
3 beautiful styles of necklaces, I’m really fond of moss agate, so you know now which one is my favourite!
Thanks so much for stopping by bead contagion.
Your three necklaces are all gorgeous. The first one has such bold kind of tribal feel to it. You have a wonderful way of combining the elegant and the rustic. I’m really glad to have looked at your blog and I’m going to sign up for receiving emails :-)

Hi Barbara! Glad to see there is someone else besides me still hopping! :-)
I love all three of your necklaces, but I think my absolute fave is the last one…love the 2/1 transition. I also understand your quandry about the silk ribbon; I always love it in others’ pieces, but never quite know how to manage it in my own. I think you did well!
Absolutely lovely jewelry pieces. You are a talented artist.
The first necklace is a stunning piece, with that gorgeous focal… but the other two are lovely as well…. especially liked how you did the double strand!
Gorgeous work! Really Soup-er! Yep I’m still hopping! Don’t want to miss a thing!
Wow! Stunning necklaces, especially the first one. A real statement piece!
My favorite is the first piece. I love the way you pulled the colors together, just gorgeous. I think that if you’re still not liking it….. the side drops have a really nice weight to them visually, but the drop the focal hangs from seems lighter than the rest. That’s really the only thing I can see that could be fiddled with, I like the rest as is and really can’t imagine it any other way :)
